EQUAL has been working to address the needs of Black, Asian, Mixed-heritage and Muslim people in the Criminal Justice System since its conception as the Young Independent National Advisory Board in 2014. After rebranding as EQUAL in 2018, and appointing Iqbal Wahhab OBE as chair, we’ve been working to action for change in the treatment of BAME and Muslim people across the CJS with a special focus on: Prisons & Probation; the Policing of Young BAME people, and the Youth Justice System.
We make sure government bodies implement the Lammy Review, we encourage debate in civil society, we raise concerns and our recommendations and we hold different organisations accountable for the pledges they put forward. In these ways, we are continuously fighting to create a fairer justice system - one which leads to more positive outcomes for BAME, Muslim and Gypsy, Roma and Traveller people.
We think it’s about time we kept all our wonderful supporters informed of our progress.
